In the dark, Mike explores the damage to his body. He didn’t realize it earlier, but he’s bleeding from his hand where he bit it, his feet from hopping around on gravel, and several other small cuts all over his arms and legs. The bloody nose has dried up. He pokes his ribs and winces; bruised from the two—three? He can’t remember how many—times she kicked him. His wrists and ankles are rubbed raw from the zip ties. And he's generally sore all over. Hard to quantify the damage from being shaken around in the trunk. 

Apart from the big cut, it’s not so bad. It’s really not so bad. He just got beat up a little. It’s kind of nostalgic, really. He should take advantage of the alone time, try to escape, try to get his ankle free or something. But he’s getting so cold and he’s so tired. Instead, he huddles under the blankets, curls up facing the wall. It’s not so bad. The tears start up again. It’s not so bad.
